Man dies after being restrained by Met police officers in north London

The Met say he was ‘agitated and in a state of distress’ when its officers arrived at the scene on Thursday
A man has died a day after being restrained by Metropolitan Police officers in north London.

The 44-year-old was taken to hospital in a critical condition on Friday after police were called to an address in Waldegrave Road, Hornsey, to reports of a loud disturbance including threats of violence.

Scotland Yard said officers found the man “agitated and in a state of distress” and restrained him before giving medical treatment.

The man’s condition worsened before paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital, where he died the following day.

The police watchdog has launched an investigation into his death. Detective Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming, in charge of policing for Enfield and Haringey, said: “We are all truly saddened by this development, and my thoughts and those of my officers remain with the man’s family.

“We are fully co-operating with the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are investigating the events of that evening.

“I would again ask that people do not speculate until this investigation has had as much time as it needs to establish what happened.”

A man who called police did not require hospital treatment, Scotland Yard said.

Previously DCS Fleming said: “My officers were responding to a call for urgent assistance by a member of the public who was extremely concerned for their safety. They were met by a man who was clearly distressed and acting in a way that caused great concern to those in attendance. They provided first aid when his condition deteriorated.

“My officers are being supported and are fully assisting with information to understand the full circumstances of the incident.”
